Easy Crochet Square with Yarn Straps Pattern

This pattern creates a simple square with attached yarn straps, perfect for a small bag or decorative piece.

Materials:

  • Yarn (worsted weight recommended)
  • Crochet hook (size appropriate for your yarn)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Abbreviations:

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • sl st: slip stitch

Square Pattern:

Round 1: Ch 4, sl st in first ch to form a ring. Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 11 dc in ring, sl st in top of beginning ch 3. (12 dc) Round 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, sl st in first sc. (24 sc) Round 4: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in each st around, sl st in first hdc. Round 5: Ch 1, sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * to * around, sl st in first sc. Round 6: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in each st around, sl st in top of beginning ch 3.

Straps (Make 2):

After completing Round 6 of the square, do not fasten off.

Strap 1:

  1. Ch 100 (or desired strap length).
  2. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.
  3. Sl st to next stitch on the edge of the square.

Strap 2:

  1. Skip 10 stitches on the edge of the square after the first strap is attached.
  2. Ch 100 (or desired strap length).
  3. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.
  4. Sl st to the same stitch on the edge of the square where you started the chain.
  5. Sl st into the next stitch.
  6. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Finishing:

  • Weave in all loose ends.
  • Block the square if desired.
  • If you want a denser strap, you can repeat the sc row in the strap a few times.

  • Adjust the chain length for longer or shorter straps.
  • Use different stitch patterns for the straps (e.g., hdc, dc).
  • Change colors for each round of the square or for the straps.
  • Increase or decrease the number of stitches in each round to adjust the size of the square.
  • For a bag, you can crochet two identical squares and attach them together, then add the straps.
