Floral Mesh Crochet Square: Video tutorial

High quality

Hello creative crocheters!

Today, we’re diving into a pattern that beautifully blends a solid, defined floral center with a delicate, open mesh border. This gorgeous square is incredibly versatile – imagine it as part of a stunning blanket, a decorative table runner, a unique placemat, or even a chic market bag! The solid petals truly stand out against the airy background.

The rich purple yarn in the example gives it a sophisticated look, but this design would be equally stunning in a contrasting two-tone, a cheerful multi-color, or even classic cream for a vintage feel.

Let’s gather our supplies and get ready to create!

Skill Level: Intermediate (familiarity with basic crochet stitches, working in the round, and some attention to stitch placement will be helpful).

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Yarn: DK weight (or a similar weight) cotton or mercerized cotton yarn is recommended for good stitch definition and a lovely drape. (The yarn in the image appears to be a fine thread, suggesting a delicate finished piece. Adjust your yarn and hook size to achieve your desired fabric and size.)
  • Crochet Hook: Size appropriate for your chosen yarn. For DK weight, a 3.0mm – 4.0mm hook might work. For a fine thread like in the image, a 1.25mm – 1.75mm hook would be more suitable.
  • Yarn Needle: For weaving in ends.
  • Scissors

Abbreviations (US Crochet Terms):

  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • fpdc: front post double crochet
  • bpdc: back post double crochet
  • sk: skip
  • sp: space
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • *to*: repeat instructions between asterisks

The Floral Mesh Square Motif Pattern (Make as many as desired)

Each motif is worked in the round.

Round 1 (Center Ring): Ch 5, join with sl st to first ch to form a ring. (Or use a magic ring for a tighter center.)

High quality

Round 2 (Petal Bases): Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 15 dc into the ring. Join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (16 dc)

Round 3 (Beginning Petals): Ch 1, 1 sc in same st. *Ch 3, sk 1 st, 1 sc in next st*. Repeat from * to * around. Join with sl st to first sc. (8 ch-3 sps)

Round 4 (Solid Petals): Sl st into first ch-3 sp. Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 4 dc in same ch-3 sp. *5 dc in next ch-3 sp*. Repeat from * to * around. Join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (40 dc)

Round 5 (Defining Petals & Corner Setup): Ch 1, 1 sc in same st (this sc should be in the first dc of a 5-dc petal group). *1 sc in next 2 dc. (1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in next dc (this forms a corner). 1 sc in next 2 dc. 1 sc in next st (this should be the last dc of the current petal group and the first dc of the next petal group, joining them). 1 sc in next 2 dc. (1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in next dc. 1 sc in next 2 dc. 1 sc in next st*. Repeat from * to * around. Join with sl st to first sc. You should have 4 corners (ch 3 space between 2 dc) and the ‘petals’ are now defined by sc stitches, forming 8 distinct petal shapes.

Round 6 (First Mesh Layer): Sl st into next st until you reach the corner ch-3 sp. In corner ch-3 sp: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same corner sp. *Ch 2, sk next 3 sc, 1 dc in next dc (from Round 5), ch 2, sk next 3 sc, 1 dc in next dc (from Round 5), ch 2, sk next 3 sc, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner ch-3 sp*. Repeat from * to * 3 more times, omitting the last corner on the last repeat. Join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (You should have 4 corners formed by (3dc, ch2, 3dc) and 3 ‘chain-2, dc’ sets along each side.)

Round 7 (Second Mesh Layer): Sl st into next st until you reach the corner ch-2 sp. In corner ch-2 sp: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same corner sp. *Ch 2, (1 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2) 3 times. Sk next 3 dc, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner ch-2 sp*. Repeat from * to * 3 more times, omitting the last corner on the last repeat. Join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (You should have 4 corners formed by (3dc, ch2, 3dc) and 4 ‘dc in ch-2 sp, ch 2’ sets along each side.)

Round 8 (Final Mesh Layer / Edging): Sl st into next st until you reach the corner ch-2 sp. In corner ch-2 sp: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same corner sp. *Ch 3, (1 sc in next ch-2 sp, ch 3) 4 times. Sk next 3 dc, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next corner ch-2 sp*. Repeat from * to * 3 more times, omitting the last corner on the last repeat. Join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (You should have 4 corners formed by (3dc, ch3, 3dc) and 5 ‘sc in ch-2 sp, ch 3’ sets along each side.)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Joining Your Squares (If making a larger project)

If you’re making a larger piece like a blanket or runner, you’ll need to join your squares. The open mesh border makes these squares ideal for a “join-as-you-go” method or a simple slip stitch/whipstitch join.

High quality
  • Join-as-You-Go (recommended for seamless look): On the final round (Round 8) of your second and subsequent squares, when you reach a corner or a ch-3 space that needs to connect to an existing square, substitute a chain with a slip stitch into the corresponding space/stitch of the already completed square.
    • Example for a corner join: Instead of ch 3 in the corner, work ch 1, sl st into corner ch-3 sp of adjacent square, ch 1.
    • Example for a side join: Instead of ch 3, work ch 1, sl st into corresponding ch-3 sp of adjacent square, ch 1.
  • Whipstitch or Mattress Stitch Join: Complete all your squares, then use your yarn needle and a length of yarn to stitch them together along the edges where they meet, working through corresponding chain spaces or stitches. This creates a neat seam.

Finishing Touches

  • Blocking is key! For lace and motif projects, blocking is crucial for opening up the stitches, evening out the shape, and making the pattern truly pop. Wet your finished squares (or the entire piece), gently squeeze out excess water, and pin them to a blocking mat or soft surface, shaping each square to its desired dimensions. Allow them to dry completely.
  • Weave in any remaining loose ends securely.

And there you have it! A beautiful, intricate floral mesh square ready to be transformed into your next stunning crochet creation. The combination of solid and openwork truly makes this design special.

Happy crocheting! Don’t forget to share your finished projects with us in the comments below – we love to see your unique interpretations!
