This pattern uses basic stitches to create a soft, textured baby blanket that’s perfect for gifting. The stitch pattern is simple and repetitive, making it a relaxing project.
Skill Level: Beginner
Finished Size: Approximately 30″ x 35″ (easily adjustable)
Materials:
- Approximately 800-1000 yards of worsted weight yarn (such as soft acrylic or cotton blend)
- Crochet hook size I (5.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors
Gauge (Optional but Recommended):
While gauge isn’t critical for a blanket (it just affects the final size and yarn usage), checking it can help ensure your blanket is the size you expect.
4″ x 4″ in pattern stitch (see below) = approximately 13 stitches x 10 rows.
Stitch Abbreviations:
- ch: chain
- st(s): stitch(es)
- sc: single crochet
- dc: double crochet
- sk: skip
- sp: space
- rep: repeat
- ea: each
Pattern Notes:
- This pattern uses a simple repeat of single crochet and double crochet stitches.
- The turning chain 1 at the beginning of sc rows does NOT count as a stitch.
- The turning chain 3 at the beginning of dc rows DOES count as a stitch.
- The size is easily adjustable. To change the width, chain any odd number of stitches. To change the length, repeat the row pattern until the desired length is reached.

Instructions:
Row 1: Ch 101 (or any odd number for your desired width). Sc in the second ch from the hook and in ea ch across. (100 sc)
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), turn. Dc in the first sc. Sk next st, (sc, dc) in next st. Rep from * to * across until the last 2 sts. Sk next st, sc in the last st.
Row 3: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), turn. Sc in the first dc. Dc in the next sc, sc in the next dc. Rep from * to * across until the last st. Sc in the top of the turning ch 3.

Row 4: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), turn. Dc in the first sc. Sk next st, (sc, dc) in next st. Rep from * to * across until the last 2 sts. Sk next st, sc in the last st.
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until your blanket measures approximately 34″ or your desired length, ending with a Row 3 repeat.
Finishing Row (Optional – adds a neat edge):
Ch 1, turn. Sc in ea st across. Fasten off.
Finishing:
Weave in all loose ends securely using a tapestry needle.

Customization Ideas:
- Size: Adjust the initial chain (any odd number) and the number of repeat rows.
- Color: Use one solid color, stripes, or a self-striping yarn.
- Border: Add a simple border like single crochet or half double crochet around the entire blanket for a finished look. To add a border, join yarn to any corner after finishing the last row. Ch 1, then work sc stitches evenly around the entire blanket, working 3 sc in each corner st. Join with a slip stitch to the first sc. You can repeat this row for a wider border.
- Yarn Weight: You can use different yarn weights, but be sure to adjust your hook size accordingly and check your gauge if you want a specific size.
