Easy Crochet Beanie Pattern

Skill Level: Beginner

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn (approximately 200 yards)
  • Crochet hook size H/8 (5.0 mm)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Gauge:

Gauge isn’t crucial for this project, but approximately 4 single crochet (sc) stitches and 4 rows per inch will create an average-sized adult beanie.

Size:

This pattern fits an average adult head (20-22 inches in circumference). Adjust the number of rows to change the height and circumference if needed.

Abbreviations:

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • rep = repeat
  • RS = right side
  • WS = wrong side
  • BLO = back loop only

Pattern Notes:

  • The beanie is worked in rows and then seamed.
  • The ch 2 at the beginning of each row does NOT count as a stitch.

Instructions:

  1. Foundation Chain: Ch 60 (or any even number for your desired circumference).
  2. Row 1: Hdc in the third ch from the hook (the first ch and the skipped ch count as a turning chain), and in each ch across. Turn. (58 hdc)
  3. Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in the BLO of each st across. Turn. (58 hdc)
  4. Rows 3-40: Repeat Row 2. (You can adjust the number of rows to make the beanie taller or shorter. For a slouchier beanie, add more rows. For a tighter fit, make fewer rows.)
  5. Finishing:
    • Seaming: Fold the crocheted piece in half, with the wrong side facing out. Using your yarn needle and a long piece of yarn, sew the two short ends together using a slip stitch or mattress stitch. This creates the side seam of the beanie.
    • Closing the Top: Thread the yarn needle with the same long piece of yarn. Weave the yarn through every other stitch (or every stitch) along the top edge of the beanie. Pull the yarn tight to gather the top of the beanie closed. Secure the yarn tightly with a knot. Weave in all loose ends.
    • 翻折帽檐 (Optional): Fold up the bottom edge of the beanie to create a brim.

Variations:

  • Ribbed Brim: For a more defined brim, work the first 5-7 rows in alternating front post double crochet (fpdc) and back post double crochet (bpdc) before continuing with the main pattern.
  • Color Changes: Change colors every few rows for a striped effect.
  • Pom-Pom: Add a pom-pom to the top of the beanie for a classic look.
  • Slouchy Beanie: Add more rows for a longer, slouchier style.
  • Different Stitches: Experiment with different crochet stitches, such as single crochet, double crochet, or half double crochet, to create different textures. Just remember to adjust your starting chain and row counts as needed.
